Am I able to open a course which would show that course in the usual purple, and then show all the other courses with black lines?
By showing any nominated course with purple lines, and then showing all other courses with black with arrows showing direction of travel. This will then show pictoraily all common controls. This would then make it easy to decide on water points, whether or not too many people were visiting a control, or whether runners were entering the control from the same direction and therefore assist in following.
5 votesYou can use “Other Courses” on the View menu to view any or all other courses.

make it possible to print courses with overprint effect (or at least allow for adjusting transparency)
ISOM dictates that overprinting effect should be applied when printing. For courses this will make the purple "blend" with the other colours below the purple and the objects covered by the purple circles and lines will still be visible. Allthough not technically the same thing, the ability to set the course purple as transparent (and allow for adjusting the transparency) may be easier to implement(?), and may provide a good enough result(?).
3 votesIn Version 2.4, you can blend the purple by choosing Event/Customize Course Appearance, and checking the “blend purple with underlying map colors”.

Add a way of copying a course
In connection with the option to view another course at the same time this would facilitate the development of alternative options.

enable a toggle key, like how F4 works, which turns on or off an outline of the current print area for the selected course.
When positioning control descriptions or text on the map it is useful to know that they will appear within the area that will be printed. Sometimes during the planning stages I may wish to print some part of the map at a larger scale and being able to see whether I need to change the print area would be useful.
7 votesView/Show Print Area now implements this.

Allow Free Text with different fonts, styles and colours
Special item Text allows adding of text to the map. It would be beneficial if you could change the Font, style and colour per item.
This would allow you to add event information, registration numbers and course specific information rather than modifying the OCAD file.2 votesYou can now add text with an arbitrary font, style, and color.

Red line on the top of the map

Allow semi-transparent white boxes behind control numbers to provide better visibility.
Sometimes it's difficult to place the control number and keep it clearly visible. Allow the option of turning on a semi-transparent white box allowing you to place the control number on an area of the map it wouldn't normally be wise to place it on because of poor contrast.
This option should be enabled at the course level unlike the current white box option that stays on the map for all courses.1 voteEvent/Customize Course Apperance now has an option to outline control numbers in white to make them more visible.

Allow import of ,omap or .xmap files
Instead of the expensive OCAD I use the Open Orienteering Mapper (https://sourceforge.net/p/oorienteering/home/Home/) for creating maps. This is an open source project and thus free. And does the just perfectly fine.
This can export as .OCAD but using its native .OMAP or .XMAP format would be better as exporting to .OCAD can be lossy. Thus you need to manage two formats
115 votesPurple Pen 3.0 beta 1 now contains support for Open Orienteering Mapper files. Please check it out and email in your feedback.

Line orienteering, Attack Point, Extension, simplification etc.. Eg better drawing opportunities

Avoid moving controls shared by multiple courses by a mistake
The most significant usability problem I encounter with purple pen is that I drag a control to an alternate position forgetting it is shared by another course.
On the course view, when you move a control on one course that influences another a warning should (optionally) be offered. Maybe this should only be offered if the legs are not shared or maybe that would be confusing.
3 votesThis is now done in 2.5.0.

Allow several start (and finish) points in one course.
In some courses after a taped route you use a new start control. This is not possible in Purple Pen. At least I can't do it. This would also be useful if you are making "interval courses" for training.
3 votesYou can now use Map Exchanges in Purple Pen 2.0 to achieve this.

Make it possible to show the control description without having to make a course first.
For now PP will show an empty control description. In many contries we offer just maps with controls on to the public, and people choose themselves which controls to visit and the control sequence. For this we need a map with controls without lines between the controls. The control description will just show the control numbers and no sequence number. For now it's a workaround with score-o and select the A column for the scores and then have empty scores.
1 voteIn version 2.0, you can now place a control description on the All Controls map and use that.

A dotted line drawing tool
With a similar "Uncrossable Boundary" tool behavior, but with dotted or dashed line. By example, for a route drawing.

Possible to add different special text for each cource
When printing some courses in 1:7500 and other in 1:5000 it should be possible to write the resolution on the relevant cource.
Now I has to change the text before printing the different courses. If printing one more map later it is often I forget to cange this.1 voteThis is already possible. After entering the text, select it and choose “Change Displayed Courses…” from the Item menu. Then you can get the text to only display on some courses.

Splitting of control descriptions
It would be very nice with an option to split the control descriptions on the map eg. control 1 to 10 at left side of the map and 11 to finich on an other free area on the map.
1 votePurple Pen 2.0 allows control descriptions in multiple columns.

Improve Add / Remove Gap
Gap position on circle unpredictable about the point clicked. Either make it always symetrical about this point or make Remove Gap a button, as have to retry several times to get gap in right place, especially long gaps.
7 votesIn version 2.0, the gaps in control circles have been significantly approved to allow large gaps to be more easily created, and small gaps perfectly centered.
